Alphonsine Plessis, eine Halbwaise, wächst in Armut auf und leidet schon früh an einer Lungenkrankheit. Aber sie kann Männern den Kopf verdrehen, was ihr zugute kommt, nachdem ihr drogensüchtiger Vater sie zum wiederholten Male gegen Bares veräußert hat. Durch einen jungen Adeligen gerät sie nach einigen Umwegen aus dem Sumpf heraus und steigt in der Pariser Gesellschaft zur Edelkurtisane auf, die nur als Kameliendame bekannt ist. Sie wird ausgehalten, verkehrt in den besten Kreisen und heiratet in den Adelsstand, was ihr zu allerlei Vergünstigungen verhilft, an denen auch ihr Vater als Nutznießer teilhat. Der junge Alexandre Dumas, Sohn des berühmten Schriftstellers gleichen Namens, verliebt sich in die junge schwindsüchtige Prostituierte. An ambitious film adaptation of the famous literary source from the workshop of Alexandre Dumas Jr. It would be naive to ask how many people actually read the novel, but this work is kept in the general consciousness and most people can tell you what the story is about. But even though Bolognini gathered an exclusive cast led by the femme fatale of French cinema, Isabelle Huppert, the result is academically distant, cold, and without pace. Although the director presents beautiful images and underlines them with precisely composed and filmed music, the result is far too often noble and highly cultivated boredom. Real emotions and real emotional commitment simply do not happen here. This time I will only give it 3 stars and a 60% overall impression.
