Die junge Maklerin Alicia stolpert bei einer Inspektion über einen heruntergekommenen Wohnblock, der demnächst an einen Spekulanten verkauft werden soll. Beim Anblick der morbiden Romantik des alten Gemäuers kommt ihr die Idee, zum Geburtstag ihres Freundes Simon in genau dieser Umgebung das ultimative Schäferstündchen zu feiern. Gesagt, getan – doch als die beiden des Nachts ihr Liebesnest einweihen wollen, finden sie den letzten Mieter ermordet vor. Schlimmer: Die Mörder sind noch im Haus und plötzlich sind alle Türen verschlossen! In nackter Panik suchen Alicia und Simon einen Ausweg aus der tödlichen Falle. Doch der „Liquidator", finsterste Personifizierung seiner sadistischen Zunft, ist ihnen unerbittlich auf den Fersen. In dem verwirrenden Labyrinth aus Zimmern, Treppen und Korridoren könnte nun der Tod in jeder dunklen Ecke lauern. (WVG Medien)

The Spanish-Polish film Sweet Home is a straightforward home invasion survival movie, with the central couple so relatable, believable and good that it doesn't matter that you're watching them in a fairly expected story. You'll also find yourself rooting for them. Truthfully, you won't want some of the scenes to come to fruition while crossing your fingers in certain spots. From this perspective the film works.

Especially in the first half, Sweet Home screams in its hopelessness. Whenever the plot needs to move forward or get complicated, one of the good guys drops something, or stumbles on something, or their phone rings drawing the attention of the villain. And then there is the exaggerated score, which ends up being counterproductive. Shooting mostly in English wasn’t a very good decision, either, the Spanish actors don’t speak it very convincingly (assuming the English-Spanish BluRay is the original version and not dubbed). At times it’s also unintentionally funny. But as a plus, it has pretty good technical values and there’s the respect-worthy boss in the last act. In this case, I a have a bit of a sugar rush and I’m giving it at least three stars, even though reason tells me that it should be less.
