In 1984 the band Civil Defense (GrOb) was formed by Egor Letov, in the city of Omsk right in the middle of barren Siberia. Letov was a charismatic poet but also knowledgeable about Western pop and rock. To play punk in the Soviet Union and to start a band that did everything to sound bad, furthermore at a site where a concert had never before taken place, was controversial. The KGB took Letov to a mental asylum, from which it took three months to get him out. But the band became legendary and played in their original line-up until 1991, and then had a revival in 1999 and toured the USA. I Don't Believe in Anarchy is about music, but it's also about a country in dissolution. We get Soviet punk, but also wonderful images from the Soviet era. (Göteborg Film Festival)
