Life hasn't been easy on Mallory but after the birth of her son she tries desperately to kick her drug habit, and to stop living on the street. She wants to turn her back on her dark past and help those she knows best – people on the fringes of society. In her latest long-term documentary, Helena Třeštíková demonstrates that even seemingly hopeless lives needn't be cut short halfway. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)

Das Schaffen von Helena Třeštíková mag ich doch irgendwie lieber im Fernsehen. Diese "großen" Dokumentarfilme sind nur ein aufgeblasener und flauschiger Zeitraffer. Diesmal geht es also um die Geschichte von Mallory, die nach dem Entzug ihr Leben geändert hat und immer weitergemacht hat. Sie hat vielleicht kein Glück in der Liebe, aber sie hält an ihrem Leben fest, ist abstinent, baut eine Beziehung zu ihrem Sohn auf, findet schließlich eine Wohnung und geht sogar zur Schule. Das ist eine schöne Abwechslung nach Katka und vor allem nach René. Aber wenn ich tiefer eintauchen soll, brauche ich einen Zyklus und vor allem keine Dokumentation darüber, wie Mallory in Karlovy Vary abgerockt hat.

Helena Třeštíková is such a good documentary filmmaker that she is able to make the viewer aware of the strength of some of the life stages of the presented characters solely through the editing. Yes, it's very subjective, but it's also very powerful. Even though this is not a positive film, it shows how even a junkie homeless woman can get back on her feet if she doesn't give up.
