Ein Abenteuerthriller oder ein Survival-Horror? Im Grunde genommen ist es egal, es hat eine atmosphärische, an manchen Stellen sogar starke Umgebung mit grober Natur und viel Hoffnungslosigkeit, aber trotzdem fand ich Rituals nicht besonders außergewöhnlich. Und als ich mich so sehr auf das Ende gefreut habe, um endlich das/diejenige zu sehen, die für all diese Ereignisse verantwortlich ist, fühlte ich mich leicht betrogen. Aber das ist nur mein Problem. Wer Deliverance mochte, wird mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit auch keinen Fehler damit machen. (12.08.2010)

Sehr anständiger 70er-Jahre-Testosteronsurvival über eine Gruppe von Ärzten, deren Angelausflug in der Wildnis durch interne Konflikte und einen unerwünschten Störenfried gestört wird. Ein Vergleich mit dem bekannteren Deliverance ist nicht ganz unpassend, Rituals geht jedoch mehr auf das Horrorgenre ein. Die vielfältige, von der Zivilisation weit entfernte Einöde verleiht eine sehr solide Atmosphäre der Isolation, und mit jeder Minute, die vergeht, glaubt man dem wachsenden Verzweifeln und der Erschöpfung der Charaktere vollkommen. Es sind zwar ein paar Genreklischees dabei, aber dennoch handelt es sich um einen sehr soliden Film, der mich mit seiner Stimmung und Spannung sehr angesprochen hat. Und Hal Holbrook ist ein starkes Zugpferd! (15.02.2021)

Respectfully weak for Boorman standards. It doesn't have the right kind of kick to it like Deliverance, nor does it have the unique sound that you can tell your mates about over a beer. But not to be pejorative, the actors are great, they really had to suffer during the shooting, and it's a fine survival drama for most of the runtime. Unfortunately at the very end it turns into an trite horror movie with ridiculous make-up effects, not to mention the twist, which not even a collage of X-ray image can save. (21.07.2018)

Once again, I allowed myself to get very excited only to cry over the results. It’s true that Rituals has a lot in common with Deliverance, it’s also true that the atmosphere is reminiscent of other forest horror pieces like The Blair Witch Project, and the remarks about its very slow pace are also accurate. But it didn’t shock or affect me in any way, quite the opposite, in fact, the film left me feeling perfectly cool. The only emotion it aroused was disenchantment at the boring and amateur looking stuff I was watching. In short: a rightfully forgotten “gem”… :-( (27.11.2009)
