The allure of gold launched the Spanish galleons to the new world, drew settlers to the American West, and inspired stories like The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Now, three Californians will put a new spin on the tale.
This team of three psychics will attempt to locate a stash of gold – according to a story, stolen from a Spanish Mission over a century ago and hidden in the surrounding mountains – using only the powers of their minds.
Their process begins with a technique called 'remote viewing'. John Vivanco is given a random eight-digit number, paper and a pen. He slowly begins scribbling and drawing, sketching out images that appear to him and writing down descriptive words and phrases. He envisions a three-pronged structure of crumbling rock, at a high elevation, near a narrow mountain road flanked by two posts and a chain.
The team heads to Mission Santa Inés, the source of the rumored missing treasure. From there they begin driving the surrounding mountain roads. They encounter several dead ends, and places that simply "don't feel right" to either John or Susette Smith, a self-described 'natural psychic'. However, late one afternoon, John practically flies out of his seat when he sees, on the side of the road, the three-pronged structure of crumbling rock – one eerily similar to the one he sketched during the remote viewing session. But even more of the things John 'saw' in the session are there: a nearby house with a cupola, penned-in animals and a field of blue rock. They're certain they've found the site.
After securing permission to dig on the property, the team explores the area, led by Mike Dias, a dowser. Using a Y-shaped branch, Mike slowly covers the terrain; his stick dips down whenever he senses a hit for things like water or metals. Immediately, Mike's stick begins dipping down violently. Mike says they are some of the strongest hits he's ever had and John and Mike begin flagging an area for digging.
In the meantime, Susette spends time communicating with the spirits of the area. She has powerful visions of a bloody ambush. Spanish friars, she says, tried to hide the gold, but were overtaken by a band of Chumash Indians. One friar managed to get away with a single sack of gold and run off. She also says that John, in a past life, was this friar... and he's now returning to the spot to reclaim the treasure.
Mike and John spend two fruitless days digging... before things begin to unravel. The work is tedious and exhausting, tempers flare, and Mike's dowsing 'hits' start becoming more and more erratic. The pressure of time increases, threatening the team's chances of discovering the fabled lost treasure.
But what, in the end, will they find? Will these paranormal techniques help them uncover a legendary stash of buried gold, or will their extrasensory visions come up dry? (Verleiher-Text)
