At the foot of the Andes, the remote Colombian village of Marmato hides one of the world's largest gold reserves. With the rising price of the precious metal Marmato is the site of a modern-day gold rush, with foreign investors streaming in to buy up local mines. The population's initial enthusiasm dampens, however, and is gradually replaced by disillusionment, which eventually escalates into violent protests against the resettlement of the village by a multinational corporation. The film, shot over a six-year period, depicts the conflict between the mining giant and the local miners and provides a window into the lives and thoughts of people on both sides of the conflict – the miners as well as the investors and employees of the mining company.
