Milchmann Kosta ist vom Glück gesegnet: Er passiert nicht nur Tag für Tag auf seinem Esel unversehrt die Frontlinie, sondern wird auch noch von der Dorfschönheit Milena als Bräutigam auserwählt. Doch dann verliebt sich Kosta Hals über Kopf in eine geheimnisvolle Italienerin, die allerdings schon dem Kriegshelden Zaga versprochen ist und zudem von ihrem rachsüchtigen Ex-Mann gejagt wird. Ohne nachzudenken brennen die beiden Liebenden durch und geraten in einen Strudel fantastischer Abenteuer. (filmladen)

Man würde am liebsten "ein balkanischer Wes Anderson“ sagen. Aber dort, wo Anderson verspielt und brillant ist, ist Kusturica geistlos stupide und billig. Ein schönes Ende. Aber nur das Ende.

An absolutely crazy love story set against the backdrop of a war conflict somewhere in the Balkans. That's just Emir Kusturica for you, and that's why I love him, including his beautiful scenery and amazing music. While there is some visual craziness here that might warrant a lower rating, like when the central couple flies down a waterfall, overall, I had a great time, and I think that's what really matters. Moreover, some of the situations depicted made me think more deeply. To be specific, what did the snake, which appears mostly in the tense moments of the film, actually symbolize? There are many ways to interpret this...
