Josh lives the fast life. He is the most popular DJ in New York, and spends his nights performing - and partying hard - at the hottest club in the city. He is days away from being signed by a major label and is on his way to a life of fame and fortune, all at only 17 years old. But after an accidental drug overdose, with his mother's blessing he is sentenced by the court to live out the rest of his underage year in the custody of his estranged father in the small army town of Paragon, North Dakota. He is quickly enrolled in the local high school, where he plans to keep a low profile until he can ride out the end of his sentence and get back to New York. His plan is crushed when he is recruited by Mary, the captain of the school's struggling dance team, to mix the music for their routines. When the team wins their first competition in seven years on the strength of their new DJ, Josh softens and starts to consider that the small town may be less of a "sentence" than he feared.
