Captivating in its documentary rawness and set on the remote Scottish coast, For Those in Peril follows 18-year-old Aaron as he struggles in vain to re-enter normal life – he is the only one of five young fishermen to survive a strange and mystery-shrouded accident at sea that also killed his older brother. The local fishermen and villagers blame him for the unexplained tragedy, and so Aaron gradually becomes an outcast in his own home. The deeper he falls into his own world, the more he is convinced that he will meet his brother again. Neither his mother nor his brother’s girlfriend is capable of reaching out to him as he mourns. Debuting director Paul Wright masterfully works with music and the sounds of the ocean to intensify the disassociated, claustrophobic space inhabited by Aaron’s soul. This visually impressive film by a promising British director was successfully screened as part of Critics’ Week at this year’s festival in Cannes. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)
