Aidan und Sarah kommen in L.A. mit ihren Kindern, Tucker und Grace, gerade über die Runden. Aidan hat keine Aufträge als Schauspieler und Sarahs Job ist schlecht bezahlt. Aidans Vater Gabe ist bislang für die Privatschule seiner Enkel aufgekommen. Aufgrund einer Krebserkrankung benötigt er das Geld nun aber für die Behandlung. Aidan will daher Tucker und Grace selbst unterrichten. Und so startet er in ein unkonventionelles Abenteuer, bei dem auch er Neues über Leben und Welt lernt. (ORF)

This films portrays the life of one Jewish family who has lived through some hardships but is quite likable. Too likable, perhaps. It was shot in such a way that it was impossible not to grow fond of this family. Add in some geek jokes, Sheldon Cooper and one dunderhead who doesn’t know what to do with his life, because in his heart he is still a little kid with a head full of ogres, videogames and dark mages. Oh, and he’s a genius, by the way. Wish I Was Here is an independent American movie with everything that entails, which tells its story in such a way you just can’t dislike it.

Yeah, I quite liked this. It's funny just enough, it doesn't pretend too much, and there are interesting characters, including Kate Hudson, whom I usually don't really like. Zach Braff shows that he is a good creator and a good director, and luckily he doesn't get too carried away with sentimentality, but just shows that life is sometimes great and sometimes just crazy difficult.
