With great haste, Johan Stensrud goes to the province of Maputo in Mozambique to clear mines. He is an emergency replacement for a man who has been killed in a car accident. He soon starts to doubt the official version of this mans demise. As Stensrud gets experience and knowledge, he discovers the scope and contours of the particular crime and corruption which permeates this country. Attempts are made on his and his wifes lives, and when he complains to the Norwegian ambassador, he is treated as a high-strung hysteric who cannot deal with the hard realities which confront foreigners. The Successor is a thriller which examines the meeting point of Europe and Africa. It crosses the news barrier, the official version of the dark continent we see every night on our television sets.
