Brødre

You could call this poetic documentary a home video version of Richard Linklater's wonderful Boyhood. Just as consistent and spellbinding, but with its own strong voice. The director Aslaug Holm recorded her two sons over an eight-year period. The film takes off when the younger brother Lukas starts at the school that the older brother Markus already goes to. We follow the boys at home in Oslo, in their free time and on their trips to the island of Smøla where the mother grew up. Brothers tells us about the small everyday things and about how time can both feel like an eternity and go very quickly. It's melancholy, funny and soul-searching. And when the mother doesn't know it's time to call it quits, it's the sons who tell her to do so. (Göteborg Film Festival)
