1766. Frankreich zur Zeit Ludwig XV. In der Nebellandschaft von Gvaudan fallen unzählige Frauen und Kinder einer blutrünstigen Bestie zum Opfer. Der König schickt den jungen Wissenschaftler Grgoire de Fronsac in die Provinz, um diese Morde zu untersuchen. Fronsac und sein Blutsbruder Mani entdecken schließlich, dass die mörderische Bestie keineswegs eine übernatürliche Kreatur, oder gar nur ein tollwütiger Wolf ist. Another French attempt to make a film in a Hollywood package, but this time it got out of hand. The result is a mess, with a monster like in Predator, a victim caught like in Jaws, love, sex, kung fu (in 17th century France !!), an Indian, a mutant villain, etc. It's terrible crap, but I have to say I wasn't bored.

Im Wettbewerb um das verkorksteste Motiv gewinnt Gans die präparierte Wolfsklaue. Das Traurige daran ist, dass gemessen an dem, wie spannend und gut aufgebaut dieser Film stellenweise sein, er andernorts nicht über ausreichenden Witz verfügt. Dieses unentwegte Hin-und-Her der Action-Ebene mit einem dunklen Drama über die bevorstehende Änderung der Ordnung beißt sich einfach wie sich besoffene Stammgäste eine schäbigen Hamburger Kneipe prügeln. Es hätte weniger Kung Fu, weniger Vinnetou und mehr perverse Mondänheit, mit welcher der hervorragende Vincent Cassel Realien in den Film einbringt. Die Idee scheint mir genial zu sein, ihre Verarbeitung wie ein billiger, verratener Hamburger vom Imbissstand.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a type of French epic film that aims to emulate overseas blockbusters with its colorful plot, settings, and action elements, and it does a fairly good job of it. The excellent cinematography, dynamic action, romantic exteriors, and decent special effects deserve praise. However, the screenplay falters, as it apparently doesn't pay much attention to the logic of the plot or many essential details. An Indian and his European friend use East Asian martial arts, and the creature on screen seems to belong to a different genre. Nevertheless, it's a decent watch, and the audience won't be bored for even a moment. Overall impression: 50%.

Undoubtedly, the film’s assets include Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci’s performance, as well as the fact that at certain moments I watched it with a kind of perverse joy. That’s it, however, in terms of the positives. It was basically a hodgepodge of various genres, which was neither here nor there. It would have been worth only one star, but another one goes to Monica Bellucci...
