Nachdem die Zwerge um Thorin Eisenschild den Schatz im Einsamen Berg wieder in Besitz genommen haben, rächt sich der gewaltige Drache Smaug an den Menschen für deren Mithilfe. Wutentbrannt legt er die Seestadt Esgaroth in Schutt und Asche. Zuflucht suchend wenden sich die Bewohner an Thorin Eisenschild, doch der ist bereits der Drachenkrankheit verfallen. Aus Gier nach Macht und Gold verwehrt er die Hilfe. Bilbo versucht zu vermitteln, doch der Krieg zwischen Zwergen, Menschen und Elben ist nicht zu verhindern. Da kommt mit Sauron und seinem Heer von Orks eine weitaus dunklere Macht ins Spiel. (ORF)
