In 2012, filmmaker James Franco and a group of nine young filmmakers set out to adapt to the screen the poetry of American poet and novelist Stephen Dobyns. The group produced a collection of 10 individual short films that were edited into a feature narrative depicting Dobyns' life from childhood to adulthood, his career transition from journalism to poetry, and the romantic relationships that influenced his work.
