Der ambitionierte Henry Whipple (Dennis Quaid) hat sehr hart gearbeitet, um die Farm seines Vaters zu einem halbwegs lukrativen Unternehmen aufzubauen. Die Farm in Iowa ist immerhin schon seit drei Generationen in der Whipple Familie. Doch mit zunehmendem Alter erscheint ihm der Ruhestand immer verlockender. Eigentlich favorisiert Henry seinen älteren Sohn Grant (Patrick Stevens) als seinen Nachfolger, aber der entschließt sich stattdessen Iowa zu verlassen und die Welt zu erkunden. So fokussieren sich die Erwartungen und Ambitionen des Vaters auf seinen jüngeren Sohn, den rebellischen Dean (Zac Efron). Leider zeigt dieser wenig Interesse daran, den familiären Landwirtschaftsbetrieb zu übernehmen. Der junge Mann träumt vielmehr davon, eines Tages ein erfolgreicher Rennfahrer zu werden und verbringt seine Zeit lieber auf der Rennstrecke als malochend auf irgendwelchen Feldern. Doch es kommt, wie es kommen muss: Während einer offiziellen Untersuchung kommt das elterliche Unternehmen unter Beschuss und die Whipples werden beschuldigt, unseriöse Geschäfte getätigt zu haben. Vor dem finanziellen Ruin stehend, muss sich Dean schließlich zwischen seiner Karriere als Rennfahrer oder der Existenz seiner Familie entscheiden. (Concorde Filmverleih)

Yes, at first glance it is supposed to be a family drama, but at a second glance, you will realize that the values that are respected in America are quite twisted. What is concealed here is quite crazy. Justice is meaningless, but we will basically almost celebrate it. Should this film have a message? No, better not. If anything, it should have been presented differently and not as an agricultural drama.

It’s this strange ode to farmer families that live somewhere in the middle of the USA and take care of so many fields that they can undoubtedly feed not only their own state, but the entire country as well. The excellent cinematography showed me an interesting piece of America, which on the one hand is represented by beautiful nature, but on the other, it means thousands and thousands of acres of corn fields, which essentially means that you will be stuck here until you die living off nothing else than corn meal. So naturally, Zac Efron needs to become the model of the rebellious youth who is sick of farming and who wants to go make his big dreams come true. But sometimes we are not in this world to make our dreams come true. And every now and then it might happen that the rebelliousness will cause something nobody wanted to happen. The ending was pretty much a roller-coaster of emotions, which elevated the movie from a three-star to a four-star review. It’s a movie from a world that we will never be able to understand. That might be why the film got such bad reviews here. But if you work your way through the piles of farming bullshit, you will find out that this movie tells the story of a pretty big family tragedy. By the way, both Zac and Dennis are excellent.
