Als im Indianerreservat Pine ein Mann ermordet wird, soll der unerfahrene FBI-Agent Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) den Fall lösen. Ihm zur Seite steht FBI-Routinier Coutelle (Sam Shepard), der dem Jungspund mit indianischen Vorfahren unter die Arme greifen soll. Zunächst vertraut Ray auf die Erfahrung seines Kollegen.
