Der englische Bauer Ted Narracott ersteigert bei einer Auktion ein wunderschönes Pferd. Begeistert schließt sein Sohn Albert es ins Herz und nennt es Joey. Liebevoll bereitet er das Halbblut auf die schwere Arbeit mit dem Pflug vor. Da muss Ted das wundervolle Tier aus Geldnöten an die Armee verkaufen. Als der Erste Weltkrieg ausbricht, beginnt für Joey eine Odyssee durch Europas Schlachtfelder. Schicksalshaft wechseln seine Besitzer, die aus allen Kriegsparteien kommen. Albert, der ebenfalls in den Kampf zieht, gibt die Hoffnung nicht auf, Joey wiederzufinden. (ORF)
