Eigentlich müsste Craig (Keir Gilchrist) mit seinem Leben zufrieden sein. Der 16-Jährige ist gesund, hat Freunde, lebt in einer intakten Familie und geht an eine renommierte Privatschule. Und dennoch stimmt etwas nicht mit ihm. Craig plagen seit einiger Zeit Selbstmordgedanken. Diese werden so konkret, dass er sich freiwillig in eine Brooklyner Nervenheilanstalt einweisen lässt. Dort stellt man ihn fünf Tage unter Beobachtung - allerdings in der Erwachsenenstation, denn die Abteilung für Jugendliche wird gerade renoviert. Zwischen den schwer gestörten Mitpatienten fühlt sich Craig völlig fehl am Platz, bis er die Bekanntschaft mit dem sympathischen Bobby (Zach Galifianakis) macht. Der Spaßvogel nimmt den Jungen unter seine Fittiche. Doch Bobby verschweigt Craig seine eigenen Probleme, die plötzlich in aller Heftigkeit zum Vorschein kommen. (Verleiher-Text)

A beautiful film about people around us and in us. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is not really a comedy, even though every scene in the insane asylum is actually comical. But it’s a story about people trying to solve their individual problems. Everybody has their own way of doing that, and everybody makes a confession in a way that suits them. Every character has their charm and their secret. This movie was a pleasure to watch, also thanks to its cast which made a great team. Zach Galifianakis actually proved to me that he is not just a total wacko but also a great actor who is able to play any kind of role. I hope that Emma Roberts will stay this amazing in the coming years, because as it is, she is a joy to watch in every movie she appears in.

Zach Galifianakis in a role I quite like, moreover in a film that tackles a grateful theme - adolescence, further complicated here by the fact that the main character (not Zach Galifianakis) is quite disturbed and commits suicide. He has to find his way among the similarly disturbed. Unfortunately, it's kind of bland in places and the main character is actually uninteresting.
