Mit trockenem Humor und entwaffnender Direktheit verzaubert Erin den frischgebackenen Single Garrett bei Bier, Bar-Smalltalk - und beim Frühstück am nächsten Morgen. Weil die Chemie ganz offensichtlich stimmt, lassen sie sich auf eine leidenschaftliche Sommerliebelei ein, doch beide gehen vom Ende der Beziehung aus, sobald Erin nach San Francisco zurückkehrt und Garrett in New York City seine Arbeit wieder aufnimmt. Weil aber die gemeinsamen sechs Wochen unauslöschliche Spuren hinterlassen, wünschen sich bald beide, dass die Zweisamkeit niemals enden möge. Garretts Freunde Box und Dan ziehen ihn bereits damit auf, dass er plötzlich auf seine schlanke Linie achtet und ununterbrochen am Handy hängt, denn sie haben kein Interesse daran, ihren Trinkkumpanen - wie schon so oft - an eine derart wackelige Beziehung zu verlieren. Gleichzeitig versucht Erins übervorsorgliche, verheiratete Schwester Corrine zu verhindern, dass Erin immer wieder denselben Fehler begeht. Obwohl ein Kontinent zwischen ihnen liegt, Freunde und Verwandte nur mit dem Kopf schütteln und unerwartete Verlockungen die Probleme nicht einfacher machen, findet das Paar schließlich doch etwas, was man Liebe nennen darf. Vielleicht könnten die vielen unanständigen SMS und die mitternächtlichen Anrufe den beiden sogar helfen, endlich all die zwischen ihnen stehenden Hindernisse aus dem Weg zu räumen. (Verleiher-Text)

This romantic comedy has a huge charm to it. Especially since Justin and Drew really fell in love during the making of this film, so I didn’t have to force myself at all to believe their performances. Here it was simply clear from the first minute, when they drew attention to themselves with bright flashes in their eyes. And in the end, I had a really good time. It was obvious that the movie didn’t want to cater to mass tastes so at times it was harsh, crass and so on. But that that’s the beautiful thing about it, because life is exactly like that. On the other hand, it was a real pity that Justin had two great pals in this movie – Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day – but the creators just throw them aside without a moment’s hesitation. Even though that without them, the movie would have been only a half of what it was. Anyhow, it was a great movie, proving that love is love and that it emerges, perishes and develops in any form, and the usual clichés do not always apply. This is probably what I liked about it the most.

I guess I hadn't seen an American comedy in a while, or I just had to see something this light-hearted at that moment. Or maybe it was the fact that I hadn't been to the cinema in a while and got carried away by the experience. I don't know. But I really was entertained the whole time, and I didn't even mourn the fact that the ending was what it was. Maybe it was helped by the fact that I enjoyed the dialogue (and what American romantic comedy can you say the same thing about?). I found the film quite believable on that level. So I closed the books and said to myself "Fuck it, why not just give this 4 stars?". X-D

Ein gewöhnlicher romantischer Film mit zwei sympathischen Hauptfiguren, der unterhaltsamen Christina Applegate sowie einem schönen Vorspann (dafür bekommt der Film Pluspunkte) und einem überflüssig vulgären und gepfefferten Humor, den ich nicht witzig fand, der schrecklichen Person namens Charlie Day in einer Nebenrolle (wie kann überhaupt jemand ernsthaft behaupten, dass dieser Trottel ein Komiker ist?) und mit einem superklischeehaften Drehbuch, das man schon hundertmal gesehen hat (dafür gibt es Minuspunkte). Zweieinhalb Sterne, d. h. ein durchschnittlicher Film.

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long do have quite good chemistry between them, and they want to show us that even with a long-distance relationship, one shouldn't give up, but I simply wasn't entertained by the story. The romance at the beginning is nice, almost like something out of a rom-com, but then it's just the boring pitfalls of the relationship, which of course end well. It can't be any other way...
