Stalingrad

Ein (buchstäblich) eiskalter (Anti)Kriegsfilm, der ruhig den Untertitel "Das Boot ohne Boot" haben könnte. So sehr ist er gelungen. Einen großen Teil des Films hat für sich der exzellente Karel Heřmánek gestohlen, der unvergesslich und spielend alle anderen Schauspieler in den Schatten stellt. Das heißt aber nicht, dass z. B. Thomas Kretschmann oder Dominique Horwitz schlecht wären. Überhaupt nicht. Fünf Sterne. (06.09.2011)

Ein sehr desillusionierender Blick auf die Schlacht von Stalingrad aus der Sicht derer, die sie verloren haben. Im Imperium gibt es keinen Platz für Heldentum, keinen Platz für Ideale und Glauben. Das Einzige, was zählt, ist das Überleben. Aber das ist bei Stalingrad eher eine Fiktion. Dass nicht nur die heldenhaften Männer der Roten Armee an der Wolga litten, sondern vor allem die deutschen Truppen in der Endphase der Schlacht, wird hier in aller Offenheit und Schonungslosigkeit, ohne unnötige Heroisierung, eingefangen. Im Gegenteil. In einer Schlacht, in der Zehntausende von Männern umsonst geopfert wurden, zeigte sich das Paradoxon des Krieges am deutlichsten: Diejenigen, die ihn führen, leiden am wenigsten, und es sterben nur unschuldige Figuren auf dem Schachbrett. Genau das hat der Film Stalingrad perfekt eingefangen. Inhaltlich besser als zehn Soldaten James Ryan auf einmal, aber leider technisch "einfach nur ein deutscher Film". Und das merkt man - vor allem im ersten Drittel, wenn die Massenszenen keinen überzeugenden und atemberaubenden Eindruck machen. Aber wenn der Fokus erst einmal auf der verzweifelten Masse der "lebenden Toten" liegt, ist Vilsmaiers Film einer der besten, die das Kriegsgenre zu bieten hat. (27.01.2004)

Stalingrad is an impressively made war drama that maximizes its minimal resources. The film skips grand epic battle scenes and instead focuses on the small-scale war in the tunnels, with only a single T-34 tank making an appearance. This approach makes the film even more impactful. It doesn’t depict the Battle of Stalingrad as a massive encirclement operation but instead tells the story through the experiences of individuals, adding a human element that works in its favor. It's a refreshing change from the usual war epics. Interestingly, Karel Heřmánek was cast as a Wehrmacht captain, a notable shift from his usual roles. But they definitely made the right choice. Despite being a relatively famous film and at the same time a German perspective on the Eastern Front of World War II, it has a number of shortcomings. Among other things, you can see its limited budget, as there are no grand and generously shot battle scenes. Even the tank battle is small with a group of actors leading it. Although the film does not have Soviet pathos and is not full of ideology, it is evident that the German side is trying to smooth over its past and retouch it in several details. It is amusing when a German officer tells his subordinates that he is not a Nazi, right in the middle of his staff, or when a German soldier expresses surprise in front of a group of officers about the mistreatment of Soviet prisoners of war. Of course, many soldiers disagreed with that, but it was a common practice and was as chronically known as the solution to the Jewish question. The film has a peculiar structure, where it is difficult to imagine, based on the events on the screen, how the battle actually took place and map out all its phases. The clash in the film takes the form of a series of episodic conflicts, where the individual is mostly lost. Some scenes seem rather crazy, like that officer's storeroom stuffed with provisions amid soldiers starving to death, which the characters of the film find abandoned, it is truly unbelievable. Just like that strange final escape from relative safety into no man's land. Overall impression: 55%. (20.03.2011)
