Aufgrund menschlichen Versagens hat sich im Bahnhof von Fuller Yard ein mit giftigen Chemikalien beladener Güterzug führerlos in Bewegung gesetzt. Verschubmeisterin Connie Hooper kann das gefährliche 'Biest' auf der Fahrt durch dicht besiedeltes Gebiet nicht mehr aufhalten. Da fassen der erfahrene Lokführer Frank Barnes und sein junger Kollege Will Colson einen riskanten Entschluss: Sie wollen dem Zug mit ihrer Lok hinterherrasen, um eine Katastrophe zu verhindern.
