Hildegard Knef geht einen langen Weg, bis sie zu sich selbst findet: Aus bedrückenden familiären Verhältnissen gelingt ihr der Sprung in die Schauspielausbildung, doch in den letzten Kriegswirren zählt nur mehr das blanke Überleben. Nach Filmerfolgen und Fehlgriffen, falschen und richtigen Männern, lähmender Langeweile in Hollywood und einer turbulenten Hass- Liebe mit dem deutschen Publikum muss die Kämpfernatur Hilde lernen, dass manchmal andere Dinge zählen als der Ellenbogenkampf im Showbiz: In ihrer eigenen Geschichte und im Inneren ihrer Seele findet sie die Substanz für die Hilde, auf die sie selbst aber auch das deutsche Publikum immer gewartet hat. Einer der deutschen Lebenswege nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Hildegard Knef war die Sünderin, ein Kinotraum, ein Weltstar, eine Ikone. Und sehr, sehr cool. Dies ist ihr Leben. (Verleiher-Text)

Up to this point, I had no idea about the existence, let alone the acting and singing fame of Hildegard Knef, and I must admit that even my encounter with this autobiographical film did not convince me that it would be any sort of a loss or mistake. Not even the big eyes of the otherwise sympathetic Heike Makatsch worked on me, no matter how hard she tried. I remained indifferent to her character until the end, and I consider the film to be a mere filler of broadcasting time. Overall impression: 40%.

I have to say I was considering giving the film three stars. Mostly because I didn’t really know the actress Hildegard Knef until this movie, so I didn’t know what to expect. However, for a biopic made with precision it definitely deserves the extra star. I really liked Heike Makatsch’s take on her character. Add in the great atmosphere of the World War, then the post-war period and finally Hollywood. It would be foolish to rate it lower. This biopic is a properly made movie with all the good, but also bad, that this genre entails.
