Bisher fühlte sich der 17-jährige Percy Jackson wie ein ganz normaler Teenager. Bei einem Schulausflug in ein Museum wird er jedoch von einem Riesenmonster angegriffen und erfährt, dass er der Sohn des griechischen Gottes Poseidon ist. Da Zeus ihn beschuldigt, die mächtigste Waffe, den Blitz, gestohlen zu haben, befindet er sich in größter Gefahr. Percy muss den Dieb finden.
