Afghanistan heute. Während andauernde Kämpfe das vom Krieg zerrissene Land erschüttern, wird eine Einheit von U.S.-Soldaten abgestellt, um eine strategisch wichtige Straße, die an einem verlassenen Steinhaus vorbeiführt, zu erobern und unter ihre Kontrolle zu bringen. Unterwegs entdecken die Soldaten tief in einer geheimnisvollen Schlucht versteckt eine antike Statue. Als sie das Relikt für Schießübungen missbrauchen und dabei zerstören, setzen sie unabsichtlich eine rachgierige übernatürliche Kraft frei, die einen erbarmungslosen Krieg gegen die Männer führt. It’s as disappointing as Dead Birds. I’m sure there will be some good responses, but Turner’s style just doesn’t work on me. Nothing happens for a very long time and the atmosphere it builds collapses at every turn. When something finally does happen, it’s over so quickly that you don’t have time to realise what it was, leaving boredom to take back control. The Afghan desert setting is not the only thing this film has in common with last year’s The Objective, there’s actually a lot more than I was willing to admit while I watched it. And now I realise that even my unloved Dead Birds left me with a better impression than this one. Take away the jump-scares, the attractive setting and the good looking monsters, and you have Red Sands. Unfortunately.
