15 Jahre ist es her, seit der junge Wissenschaftler Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany, „A beautiful mind") von seiner Galapagos-Expedition zurückkehrte. Das Manuskript über die dort gesammelten Erkenntnisse ist jedoch weit davon entfernt, fertig zu sein. Zu tief sitzt die Furcht vor den sozialen Auswirkungen seiner Arbeit - Auswirkungen, die in seiner zersplitternden Ehe zur puritanischen Emma (Jennifer Connelly, „Requiem for a Dream") bereits greifbar werden. Während Darwin seine jung verstorbene Lieblingstochter Annie (Martha West) herbei halluziniert und von ihr moralische Unterstützung für sein Lebenswerk einholt, fürchtet Emma um das ewige Seelenheil der Familie, sollten die gotteslästerlichen Theorien ihres Gemahls tatsächlich zum Niedergang des Glaubens führen. Aber Darwin schreibt unbeirrt weiter und geht zwischen Trauma und sozialer Verantwortung zunehmend selbst zugrunde. (Verleiher-Text)

This isn’t primarily (or even secondarily) about the emergence of “Origin of the Species", nor about Darwin or the Theory of Evolution as such. Primarily, it is a well-acted, bittersweet drama and only afterwards what I said above. At the beginning inventive (“fairytale" story-telling to the daughter, the cycle of life in the grass behind the house) and powerful theme, but it changes direction all too soon and begins to run on one self-pitying spot. P.S.: Paul "Stephen Maturin" Bettany for the role of Darwin was a great choice, augmented further by casting of the wife.

I didn’t expect this with CREATION, but I don’t have anything bad to say about the movie. Great direction, an excellent cast (Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany and that little girl too) a beautifully captured story about a family, love, losses and about a life strung between science and faith. All this tinged by touching background music by Christopher Young.
