August 1961: Um sich ein bisschen West-Geld zu verdienen, schmuggelt der Ostberliner Plasteleger Hans Kuhlke, Altmetall zu seinem Freund Erwin Sawatzke nach Westberlin. Eines Abends sind er und seine Frau bei den Sawatzkes eingeladen. Ihr Sohn Paul bleibt derweil bei einem Freund in Ostberlin. In dieser Sommernacht spitzt sich die politische Lage in Berlin dramatisch zu: Die Grenzen werden dicht gemacht, der Bau der Mauer eingeleitet. Durch das Verschwinden seiner Eltern ist der 14-jährige Pionier Paul hin-und hergerissen zwischen familiärer Bindung und Loyalität zur Partei. In letzter Sekunde durchschaut er seine Rolle im System und wird von seiner Klavierlehrerin aufgenommen. (Verleiher-Text)

One of the films where a strong theme and average execution stand against each other. The division of one city and nation and on a human level, even individual families, naturally evokes a great deal of emotions and works perfectly. For the final comment and tragic culmination of the story, I can't give less than three stars. On the other hand, the direction is certainly not innovative, the script is only average, and especially the supporting characters are very flat. In some cases, they are simplified into unwanted caricatures, especially the representatives of East German state power. The acting performances fit into typical German television production, meaning they are not terrible, but definitely not captivating. Overall impression: 50%.
