Folge 1: Der Rebell Der österreichische Kronprinz Rudolf, einziger Sohn von Kaiserin Sisi und Kaiser Franz-Joesph, genießt sein Leben als begehrtester Junggeselle Europas in vollen Zügen. Als Offizier in Prag verliebt er sich in ein jüdisches Mädchen und muss eine Entscheidung treffen zwischen seinen politischen Ambitionen und seinem privaten Glück.
Folge 2: Mayerling Rudolfs Ehe mit Prinzessin Stephanie von Belgien ist gescheitert. Vom politischen Establishment um Premierminister Graf Taaffe von Macht und Politik isoliert, von deutschnationalen Antisemiten bekämpft, äußert er Selbstmordgedanken. Während die politische Lage sich zuspitzt eröffnet die Baronesse Mary Vetsera dem sensiblen Rudolf eine neue Welt bedingungsloser Liebe. (ORF)

Eine sehr gute Aufarbeitung der Mayerling-Tragödie. Realistisch, sachlich und sehr anregend. Weder das Kapitel über die Enzyklopädie des Prinzen Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, noch das Prag-Kapitel, noch irgendetwas Substanzielles, das einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Darstellung des Charakters des Prinzen hatte, fehlte. Eine ideale Wahl für alle, die sich für das Schicksal der Dynastie Habsburg-Lothringen interessieren. Zu den älteren Stars gehören Omar Sharif, der die Hauptrolle in Mayerling von '68 spielte, jetzt als Lehrer des Prinzen, und Klaus Maria Brandauer als Franz Joseph I., der perfekt in die Sammlung von TV-Film-Monarchen passt.

The death of Crown Prince Rudolf meant the same thing in its time as the death of Princess Diana a century later. Based on his fate and tragic end, a historical costume film was created, which is not nearly as kitschy as the films about Empress Sissi from the 1950s, but it also did not avoid having a romanticizing and unhistorical approach to the subject. The creators of the film try to build on the legend of the talented prince, who would have been a modern and capable leader of the state after ascending to the throne, but instead became a victim of his position and the pressure from his surroundings. To put it soberly, he was primarily a victim of his health, and today's medicine should be able to provide a specific diagnosis for his mental state. He would have struggled with his high state position, and there is not much mystery surrounding his suicide. The Crown Prince, whether in terms of script quality or acting performances, is easily forgettable. Overall impression: 35%. The film can only please with shots of elegant costumes and historical buildings of its era.
