Jon Baker (Shepard) und Frank „Ponch" Poncherello (Peña) haben sich erfolgreich bei der California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles beworben – aber aus ganz unterschiedlichen Gründen. Baker hat seine beste Zeit als Motorrad-Profi hinter sich und braucht einen frischen Start, um seine Ehe zu retten. Poncherello ist ein arroganter Undercover-Agent des FBI – er untersucht einen Millionenraub, der möglicherweise von CHP-Beamten ausgeführt wurde. Der unerfahrene Neuling und der abgebrühte Profi sollen ein Team bilden, doch weil sie ständig aneinandergeraten, ist es mit ihrer Partnerschaft nicht weit her. Allerdings könnten Bakers Erfahrungen im Motorradsattel und Ponchs Herkunft aus den Problemvierteln eine unschlagbare Kombination ergeben – falls sich die beiden nicht vorher gegenseitig in den Wahnsinn treiben. Michael Peña and Dax Shepard are brutally overacting here. They are playing at the classic buddy cop action comedy which hasn’t really been here for a long time. But the problem is that even though the technical aspect of the action scenes is spot on, the relationship of the two idiots really didn’t work here. Michael portrays an idiot; Dax portrays an idiot. Michael is at least a tiny bit funny but when they are together it simply doesn’t work.

I like buddy movies, but with this one, I felt that the buddy element doesn't really work and that the characters are somewhat forcibly thrust into it, relying only on clichés, occasionally seasoned with quite harsh injuries that help the film along. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes not at all. And the story is one big cliché.
