Eine Gruppe amerikanischer Teenager begibt sich auf einen Urlaub nach Irland. Hier wollen sie sich in den Wäldern erholen, werden vorher aber vor einigen Pilzen gewarnt, die sie auf keinen Fall essen sollen. Sie tun es doch, und werden daraufhin von bösen Visionen heimgesucht. Was ist Halluzination und was ist Realität? Die Teens können dies nur noch schwer auseinanderhalten, als sie aber einer nach dem anderen abgeschlachtet werden, wird aber kalr, das keinesfalls alles ein Gespinst ihrer Phantasie sein kann. In spite of its appalling and messy script, Shrooms is fairly well made and atmospheric. It’s very confusing in the second half, with moments when I didn’t know what was going on. That might be warranted given that the the heroes are suffering hallucinations, but when you know less than the characters themselves, that’s too much. The twist is quite predictable considering the course of the story, and also very unoriginal. Shrooms had a lot of potential, if the creators had been a bit more daring and made a film that would be worthy of its name, it could have resulted in something more than an average teenage-slasher.

Hör mal, hast du Die Pilze gesehen? Nein? Alter, das ist ein perfekter Horrorfilm! Lass uns gleich zu mir gehen, ich muss ihn dir zeigen! Genau so bin ich vor ein paar Jahren auf diesen Film gestoßen, den mein Freund mir empfohlen hat, weil er dachte, ich würde mich vor Angst in die Hose machen. Ist nicht passiert, aber komischerweise habe ich mich die ganze Zeit recht gut unterhalten gefühlt, dafür danke ich der schönen Umgebung der tiefen Wälder. Den Punkt hatte ich schon nach zwanzig Minuten gerochen, aber ein überraschendes Ende habe ich nicht erwartet. Es schien mir nur schade um das ungenutzte Potenzial zu sein, da das Thema mit halluzinogenen Pilzen viele visuelle Spielereien ermöglicht hätte. Die sprechende Kuh war jedoch super.

Quite good little horror flick. The setting of foggy and inhospitable woods works perfectly and the atmosphere is so thick in places that you could cut it. Unfortunately, the film desperately lacks more skilful direction, which would have added some ideas and thought instead of only endless chases through the woods and a bunch of mostly unsuccessful jump-scares. Shrooms is terribly marred by its complete inability to tell even the simplest and most played-out story smoothly, and then by the awfully chaotic editing of the horror scenes that subject us to flashback sequences of a few images and we never get to see the murders themselves. If it wasn’t for that, this could have been the best teen slasher in recent years; this way it's nothing but average, heavily missing the untapped potential that those little stinking mushrooms undoubtedly have...) Yeah, and I’d rather not speak about that final shocking twist.
