In “Angel” erzählt François Ozon (“8 Frauen”) die emotional ergreifende Geschichte der jungen und talentierten Schriftstellerin Angel Deverell im England des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit einer unbändigen Kreativität und Leidenschaft kämpft sich die junge Schriftstellerin aus ihren bescheidenen Verhältnissen frei. Angels Traum von Erfolg, Ruhm und Liebe scheint in Erfüllung zu gehen. Ein rasanter gesellschaftlicher Aufstieg folgt, der ihr schon bald ein Leben in Luxus ermöglicht. Als ihr der talentierte, wenn auch erfolglose Maler Esmé begegnet, glaubt Angel einen Seelenverwandten gefunden zu haben und verliebt sich Hals über Kopf in den Lebemann. Obwohl sich die junge Frau nie sicher ist, ob Esmé sie oder ihr Geld liebt, hält sie an dieser großen Liebe fest. Doch dann erfährt ihr Leben auf tragische Weise eine Wendung. (Verleiher-Text)

Englisch Every once in a while, screenwriters manage to craft a character that I despise from the very start. Just recently, I was introduced to the film version of Scarlett O'Hara, which somewhat hinted that perhaps physical punishment in childhood isn't entirely obsolete. However, Angel Deverell turned this faint notion into a certainty. What a dreadful... creature. The film itself was more of an intimate affair, with the main protagonist being grating and a pain in the ass. The story straddled the line between romance and drama, revolving around a writer who could easily be compared to the likes of Danielle Steel or Rosamunde Pilcher. Logically, there shouldn't have been much to appeal to me in this mix. Yet, to my surprise, I found myself entertained. As the end credits rolled, I realized I hadn't been bored the entire time. The creators must have done something right. / Lesson learned: Want to enjoy champagne? Leave the bottle opener in the drawer. 3*+ ()
