Der Gestiefelte Kater

Eine tolle Katzensache, eine Wiedergutmachung für die letzten zwei Shrek-Filme. Der Gestiefelte Kater ist sehr witzig, fesselnd, überraschend actionreich, toll animiert… Und ich weiß nicht mehr, was noch. Schade nur, dass es in dem Film die Figur von Humpty Dumpty gibt, die meiner Meinung nach zu der Geschichte nicht besonders passt (wenn sich die Drehbuchautoren anstatt des Eis eine dritte Mieze ausgedacht hätten, wäre es auch kein Fehler gewesen). Vielen Dank für die Sprecher*innen – eine Katze mit der Stimme von Salma Hayek muss einfach perfekt sein. (20.09.2012)

Der Gestiefelte Kater ist vor allem ein flottes, manchmal humorvolles Einzelstück, dem es nicht an Action mangelt und das seine Handlung neben dem Shrek-Universum an den Klassiker Jack and the Beanstalk anlehnt. Verglichen mit dem ersten Shrek ist er nicht besonders originell, aber andererseits auch nicht langweilig oder anstößig. Es ist eine Geschichte über Freundschaft, die Suche nach der Wahrheit, Rache und Vergebung - als Animationsfilm und mit mexikanischer Musik. Pluspunkt für die nicht flache Figur des Humpty Dumpty. Im Ergebnis war es ein leicht überdurchschnittliches Stück, das zwar seine Reserven hatte, aber dennoch verging die Handlung wie im Fluge und man wurde beim Zuschauen gut unterhalten. (29.12.2018)

The feline adventurer in high boots got an opportunity to enhance his portfolio with his own feature-length film. Given his performance, there is a good chance that he will get more offers. These ninety minutes don’t abound with plot, the narrative would need bolder villains and more clearly defined objectives (the feline heist movie indicated at the beginning ultimately doesn’t materialise). However, the film smoothly moves forward and it isn’t slowed down even by the explanatory flashback, whose perceived tiresomeness is disparaged by the characters themselves. The screenwriters rather imaginatively set up the pretexts for the actions scenes, which are the film’s primary attraction (other than the tomcat’s pleading expression), though the originality lies not so much in the plot as in the multiculti intertwining of various fairy tales (Mother Goose, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and the Beanstalk). I can’t say how compatible such a fairy-tale compilation will be with the taste of a child audience, but lovers of “pure” classics devoid of jokes suitable for a censored version of American Pie will not be pleased. The offer of humour for parents is largely limited to various mild obscenities. The work with conventional adult genres is not as frequent and non-aggressive as in the first Shrek movies (other than heist movies, mainly chorizo westerns are disparaged, and the cat’s disguise is reminiscent of the costumes worn by luchadores wrestlers, though I have no idea if that was intentional), so all that’s left for the non-child viewer is to primarily enjoy how nicely the film with Garfield’s antithesis in the title role moves along. Those for whom that is not enough can think about the target audience from the perspective of gender. A seemingly boyish adventure paired a narcissistic cat with an egg-shaped something (that apparently doesn’t have eggs) and an emancipated thieving kitty, not to mention the film’s girlish content with an abundance of lovable stuffed animals and sophisticatedly choreographed dance scenes. 70% (24.11.2011)

I like cats, so I just can’t rate this worse than this. Not to mention the fact that this animated movie is really quite well-done. The ideas, the temperament of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek and even the story itself? You won’t get to see those things just in every other animated movie released nowadays. (03.12.2012)

It could be expected that it wouldn't be a new "Shrek," as even the new "Shrek" is no longer such a classic as before. So "Puss in Boots" actually didn't disappoint, because expectations were relatively low. I'm glad that the animators didn't use Puss's gaze too much, in fact, he only used it once, except when he was still a kitten and had it all the time. "Puss in Boots" is not at all surprising, it is based on fairy tales, specifically on one fairy tale, which is "Jack and the Beanstalk." A classic that even our children know. The story was approached a bit differently, a bit harshly, love was added to it - Puss finds his chosen one - there is also a villain who pretends to be a good guy, only to become one in the end, there is some betrayal from youth, well, just something completely normal that tries to ignite a strong story.
