The rough-and-tumble world of amateur ice hockey provides the setting for an all-out battle of the sexes in the Canadian indie comedy HOCKEY MOM. Single mother Paula (Jessalyn Gilsig) is a former Olympic hockey hopeful who now spends her days holding down a blue-collar job, caring for her young son, and playing the occasional game with her predominantly male coworkers. When the men go too far with their chauvinistic teasing, a frustrated Paula throws down the gauntlet and challenges them to a men-versus-women hockey match. Comic hijinx ensue as Paula struggles to whip a team of dysfunctional female hockey players into shape while making time for her job, her son, and a new love interest. Canadian actors and real-life hockey fans Jason Priestley and Margot Kidder round out the cast for a zany but affectionate homage to their national pastime. (Verleiher-Text)

Englisch Blame Canada! The birthplace of ice hockey brings its child to the screen presented unoriginally in a clash between female outsider and male favorite. The amateurism of the creators is boundless and even “Ugly Betty" looks better, with higher quality production design. And you don’t even want to see how the creators imagine ice hockey matches. Agh... The worst part are the “actors" themselves. Especially Jessalyn Gilsig, in one of the central roles, who suffers so much in front of the camera that you wish with all your heart for her to be taken out by a timely cross-check. And I won’t even go into their attempts at humor. A hopeless offering where the only bright points are the moments that are so bad that they become unintentionally funny. But thank god at least for such moments. ()
