Matěj works for a farmer and is in love with his boss’s daughter, Majdalenka. But the greedy man drives him out. Matěj makes his way as far as the royal castle, where a grand contest is being held for the hand of Princess Rozmarýna. Whoever solves three riddles will have her hand in marriage. Matěj is a clever lad, and the princess’s tasks are as easy as pie for him. The king grows fond of the bright young man but, to the general, the lady-in-waiting and the steward, Matěj just means trouble. Particularly when he befriends the courageous and honest soldier Ondra, who is secretly in love with Princess Rozmarýna. They devise a trap which will rid them of Matěj. But he, with the aid of his friend Ondra, uncovers all their tricks. The princess finally realises who truly loves her and, as a result, also solves the “loveliest riddle”. Matěj, however, is keen to set off back home to his beloved Majdalenka... (Verleiher-Text)

Das bezauberndste Rätsel ist definitiv eine der besseren Märchenproduktionen der letzten Jahre, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, wer auf dem Regiestuhl saß. Es stimmt, dass einige Charaktere (Schauspieler) ein wenig übertrieben spielen - vor allem Kikinčuk und Medvecká - aber der Rest der Besetzung war größtenteils sympathisch. Was die Handlung betrifft, so muss ich loben, dass es sich nicht um eine geradlinige und primitive Geschichte handelte - es gab einige angenehm eingefügte Peripetien. Kurzum, ein unprätentiöser Entspannungsfilm, der wahrscheinlich nie ein Klassiker werden wird, aber auf jeden Fall sehenswert ist.

Am Anfang sah es so aus, dass Das bezauberndste Rätsel ein ziemlich erträgliches Werk von Troška sein wird. Im Laufe der Zeit ist aus dem Film ein immer größerer Märchenmischmasch geworden, der schließlich nicht besonders gut war. Die Handlung kombiniert alles Mögliche, die Witze sind nicht lustig und es gibt auch einige Szenen, in denen herumgeschrien wird (typisch Troška). Außerdem findet man hier Figuren, die so dumm sind, dass es wehtut (diesmal waren es keine Teufel, sondern Räuber). Zwei Sterne gebe ich für das sympathische Paar Jan Dolanský und Veronika Kubařová und für die Kostüme.

The Loveliest Riddle falls again into the picturesque section of South Bohemian caressing and references to the popular period of neutral peasant baroque. This film does not do as good of a job of combining two Czech fairy tales together as some other films have done in the past. For the first time, however, Troška does not look for any downright dark themes in Drdov’s writing, instead emphasizing characters from other times. Medvecká's French speaker in particular is a classic educator acceptable across the centuries. Dolanský, Potměšil, and Táborský only fulfill the set scheme, but the real surprise is the pleasant performance by Veronika Kubařová.
