A priest is waiting for the young chaplain Marcel at a village railway station The landowner Jarský is also there, waiting for his daughter Marta. Marcel settles in at the parsonage. Through the window, he sees Marta carrying a wreathe to her mother's grave. The tempress Xena, betrothed to Jarský, flirts in her boudoir with the major. The major and Xena meet first lieutenant Pavel Čermák in Stromovka park. The whole village comes to hear Marcel's sermon. Xena also comes with a parcel from Marcel's mother, who is Xena's chambermaid. Marcel and Marta visit the old home of Trnka, the drunk. His wife is ill, their children are hungry. Marcel's mother suddenly dies. After the mass Marcel calls the banns of Marta and Pavel. Marta visits Xena in Prague and meets the major there at her house. She hurries to tell her father. The chaplain saves the drunk Trnka from drowning but he himself becomes ill. Xena tries in vain to seduce Pavel. Marcel is dying. Marta and Pavel's wedding takes place in the church; they are married by the priest in whose face Marta gets a glimpse of the face of Marcel. (Verleiher-Text)
