Earl Hickey hält sich mit gelegentlichen Gaunereien mehr schlecht als recht über Wasser. Bei einem Autounfall verliert er ein Rubbellos, mit dem er 100.000 Dollar gewonnen hätte, und landet verletzt im Krankenhaus. Dort lernt er im Morphiumrausch die Lehre vom Karma kennen: Wer Gutes tut, dem widerfährt auch Gutes. Earl ist begeistert und macht sich sofort daran, all seine Missetaten ganz penibel nacheinander wieder gutzumachen. Mehr im Weg als zur Seite stehen ihm dabei sein grenzdebiler Bruder Randy (Ethan Suplee) und seine Exfrau Joy (Jaime Pressly) samt ihrem neuen Lover Darnell Crabman Turner (Eddie Steeples). At last a sitcom that doesn’t try to keep everybody happy. Jason Lee in the main role is the epitome of the term “white trash" and, not only thanks to him, but also thanks to the style of humor, it reminds me of something by Kevin Smith. Humor that is not afraid of making fun of anything and anybody, while not stooping to toilet humor. Plus, the creators occasionally spice up the regular pattern with a “specialty"; this creates memorable episodes such as a parody of COPS in season two. Simply almost the ideal comedy series which, as of the beginning of season three, maintains the same excellent quality level.

I only occasionally watch American sitcoms and, basically, it can be said that only two titles from recent years occasionally make me sit in front of the television screen. Besides Earl, I also like The Big Bang Theory. The sitcom shows the life of "white trash" people and makes fun of their spiritual horizon and lifestyle. It is somewhat exaggerated to say that it is a staged variation of the cult animated series The Simpsons. I don't have a crude sense of humor and I don't particularly like the crude heroes of American comedies, but this show is funny and surprisingly refined. Furthermore, it is original, and even though the basic scheme of redemption of old sins of a nobody and a thief doesn't change at all, it is still fresh with many ideas, and thus the show does not fall into a stereotype. Given that I don't watch every episode in a row, it doesn't have a chance to get repetitive for me. Overall impression: 90%.

Ich habe mir fast die ganze erste Staffel angeschaut und abgesehen von der Idee mit der Wiedergutmachung der Sünden und von ein paar Witzen, die ich aber an einer Hand abzählen könnte, habe ich nichts gefunden, weshalb ich dieser Serie mehr als einen Stern geben sollte. Tut mir leid, Earl, du bist ein zu großer Idiot, als dass ich dich sympathisch finden könnte. Und deiner Serie fehlt nur die Lachkonserve. Peinlich.
