John just fit into the 70s. Not so much in westerns, although he wasn't bad in those either, but rather in these action crime films. Almost no one would guess he belonged to those 70 years. Moreover, the confrontation of American and English, male and female, works quite well here, not to mention that it's simply fun and the story is not at all dumb.
