Es klingt phantastisch und doch ist es schreckliche Realität. Eine Frau wird von einem unsichtbaren Wesen vergewaltigt. Wie von Geisterhand explodieren Gegenstände, geraten Autos außer Kontrolle, werden Menschen misshandelt. Bei der Erforschung dieser Geheimnisse entwicken Mediziner und Psychologen tödliche Rivalitäten: Was sich zunächst als Hirngespinst einer schizophrenen Frau dargestellt, entwickelt sich zur lebensbedrohenden Realität. Alle Mittel der Wissenschaft versagen, das unheimliche Wesen unter Kontrolle zu bekommen. Das Unheil nimmt ungehindert seinen Lauf. (Verleiher-Text)

The first half of the film gave the impression that I was watching the best ghost story ever. There isn’t any long and tedious introduction, the first encounter with the ghost happens already in the fifth minute and it’s not a cup being moved a little or the lights going off, but a proper clash, the kind you don’t see in other films until a few minutes before the end credits. You can almost cut through the atmosphere and though the score was bit irritating at first, I got used to it and I must say it’s very effective. In the second half, however, things become unnecessarily repetitive, the manifestations of the entity are shown with not very well made light effects and the initial thrill fades a little, but it’s still brilliant horror.

Ein zeitweise leicht verstaubter, aber immer noch furchterregender Horrorfilm über einen sexhungrigen Dämon. Die zweistündige Laufzeit mag zwar den explosiven Start beeinträchtigen, aber das ändert nichts daran, dass es immer noch ein außergewöhnliches Erlebnis ist. Vor allem in den Momenten des geisterhaften Vergnügens, wenn der höllisch donnernde Soundtrack von Bernstein (der drei Jahre später die Musik zu Cravens "Nightmare on Elm Street" komponierte) Sie nicht zum Luftholen kommen lässt. Also heute, inmitten der Flut moderner Geistergeschichten, dient er als perfektes Gegenmittel für Zuschauer, die die alte Schule suchen.

The Entity tempted me with its high percentage for a horror film, but then sobriety arrived. I think this is one of those cases where the reviews are influenced by nostalgia. The processing and performances are on the level of a television production and it is only average. Moreover, in my eyes, The Entity also harms itself by trying to sell the plot as a real-life story, and unfortunately, the lustful spirit does not evoke horror in me but rather annoys me. For me to take this film seriously, it would have to take itself much less seriously. Horror is a game with human imagination, and the moment someone tries to present parapsychology as a serious science, it's over for me. Overall impression: 25%.
