Zeke Bálint, the honest old miller of the village, leaves his water-mill to Anna, his only daughter, while the will also provides for the mill to be managed by Forintos Mátyás, a young miller, whom he has been raising since he was very young and treats as his own son. The two young people seem to "like each other anyway", and their marriage would make the old man happy. Forintos Mátyás's happiness is disturbed by the arrival of a group of circus men. He turns out to be much stronger than the professional strong man of the circus, who is busy showing off his strength. Then he is seduced by Piros Katinka, owner of an inn called "Golden Peacock". She is an experienced woman who might have a long history of flirting. Mátyás feels he has to make his move. Off he goes in search of the woman. The young man, hitherto unspoiled and naive, is exposed to disappointments and humiliations in the town, an ideal place of debauchery. He then is suspected of a murder. Finally, he is cleared of the accusations. He returns to his native village and his mill, where Anna, his faithful fiancée, is expecting him. (Verleiher-Text)
