Having been disinherited thanks to Stanczi, her elder female cousin, Koltay Gábor has been suing her for years to get his inheritance. Bálint, his son, is set to avail himself of no matter who's dowry. To do so, he decides to marry Mary, the daughter of Gruber Menyhért, a wealthy American and a relative of the family's solicitor. The young girl is a visitor in Budapest, and they fall in love with each other. Bálint proposes to Mary and does not change his mind, despite the fact that his would-be father-in-law breaks him the news that he is bankrupt. Gruber wants to see the Koltay estate for himself. With Stanczi being on a trip abroad, Kató, her kind-hearted daughter, allows Koltay Gábor and his son to live in the old castle while her mother is away. However, Stanci unexpectedly returns. She is outraged at what she sees and makes a scene. The news of Koltay Gábor having won his suit soon reach them. Half of the estate now belongs to Koltay. Gruber has some good news, too: he hasn't gone bankrupt. Now all obstacles to the marriage of the young couple are removed. (Verleiher-Text)
