After the death of her mother, Veronika is taken to her brother, the priest of Glogova. While the priest is engaged in prayer, a white-bearded old man places an umbrella over the little girl's basket. The villagers believe that Saint Peter himself descended from heaven to protect the orphan from the rain. The little girl grows into a beautiful woman, is educated at a Budapest boarding-school and falls in love with a student of law, Wibra György. György, the son of the wealthy Gregorics born out of wedlock, inherits an umbrella from his father. As the members of the family assume that the old man hid his wealth into the handle of the umbrella, they start hunting for it. Even György starts investigating the situation, but meets Veronika at the festival of Bábaszék, and from that point on is no longer interested in the umbrella. He proposes to the woman, and gives the umbrella away to his relatives. But the umbrella has a new handle, and the old, containing the legendary fortune, has been thrown into the fire.
