Als Jane ihren angetrunkenen Freund Tun nach einer Hochzeitsfeier heimfhrt, berrollt sie eine junge Frau, die plötzlich aus dem Nichts ber die Strae rast. In Panik verleitet Tun Jane zur Fahrerflucht. Auch wenn dies die Beziehung stark belastet, der Alltag holt das Pärchen schnell wieder ein. Besonders Tun findet sich bald wieder in seinem Fotografenjob. Doch seine Bilder sind plötzlich durch bizarre Verzerrungen und grelle Lichter unbrauchbar. Und Jane wird immer häufiger von brutalen Albtrumen geplagt, in denen ein gespenstisches Mädchen sie erbarmungslos verfolgt. Als auch Tuns Nächte von dieser Vision gestrt werden, beginnen die beiden mit Nachforschungen ber die vermeintliche Tote. Zurück am Unfallort erfahren sie, dass eine Leiche nie gefunden wurde ... YAY! A horror film that made me feel a little scared again! I divide Asian ghost stories into two groups: the ones that make me feel scared (The Grudge, Shutter) and the ones that are boring (everything else). Shutter managed this thanks to the many effective jump-scares and terrifying moments that made me feel a proper chill more than once. The story is also good, it has a nice twist and it shouldn’t be confusing even for European viewers. I have no other option than to award this representative of my least favourite subgenre with a very high rating. PS: I’d love to see how much worse the upcoming American remake will be…

Considering this is perhaps the millionth variation on the theme of a ghost story about a girl with a “white face", this is an excellent movie that has atmosphere, good ideas and it also cleverly recycles things we have seen elsewhere. The frights come in places where you expect them, but you still jump, the atmosphere is great and the bizarre twist at the end is also good. Overall, this is a pleasant Thai movie where the only thing that spoils it is that loads of similar pictures exist and that the music isn’t exploited to the full.

I thought I was done with the madness of Asian horror, but I found out there are still movies worth paying attention to that I missed during the peak of these horror films. Shutter: They Are Around Us is exactly the kind of film that you'll appreciate not only for its ability to scare you but also for the fact that it's a smart film with a story that can pull you in and spit you out at the end.
