Unter den Straßen von New York verschwinden einige Obdachlose, die sich dort ein neues Zuhause eingerichtet haben. Erst interessiert sich niemand für diese Vorfälle, aber als die Frau eines Kommissars verschwindet, wird dieser neugierig. Zusammen mit dem Koch einer Armenküche und einem Fotografen, der einige Zeit unter den Obdachlosen gelebt hat, kommt er einer Verschwörung auf die Spur, die ihn ganz nach oben ins Rathaus führt. The name, or rather it’s meaning, hints at a lot more gory fun that what you get in the end, though the last 30 minutes at least are a good example of a typical 80s horror movie. The make-up is very good and the interesting atmosphere builds up together with the number of mutants (i.e. in the last 30 minutes). The acting is not important, and neither is the zero originality of the story – as it’s typical in films like this. It’s a pity that the plans for a Rob Zombie remake seem to have been dropped, he would have done a very good job with the material.

An exemplary 1980s horror B-movie that impresses with good masks (light bulbs instead of eyes!) and a relatively good atmosphere inside a Manhattan sewer. Unfortunately, the camera spends more time at the desk in the office where the characters deal with the mysterious disappearance of people rather than showing us the delicious gore. I’m begging for a remake by R.Z., as this film really does show its age in some moments.
