Zathura - Ein Abenteuer im Weltraum

With the exception of the Harry Potter films or the animated series, there has been a decline in interest in children's films. That's why Zathura feels like a very enjoyable change of pace, perfectly capturing the spirit of most of director Jon Favreau's independent work. Instead of bombastic digital extravaganzas, it focuses more on uninhibited boys' adventure, which perfectly captivates its target audience - children around the age of 10 years - for 115 minutes. Adults may criticize the film for drawing too much inspiration from other movies. The industrial-futuristic look of the spaceship is reminiscent of Cameron's Aliens, and Debney's music is reminiscent of Arnold's soundtrack for Independence Day. But those who compare it to Jumanji are mistaken, as both films, along with their respective source material, are the work of the same person, Chris Van Allsburg, who is also responsible for The Polar Express. For adults, it can be considered a moderate sci-fi B-movie, while for young children, it guarantees an enjoyable experience. (15.01.2006)

When little Kirsten Dunst argued with her brother in Jumanji, it resulted in an unforgettable adventure. In Zathura, the sibling trio argues much more, the storyline tries too conspicuously to copy its predecessor, but not only due to the dysfunctional ending, it miserably fails. Surprisingly forgettable game that does not measure up to the wild Robin Williams at all. (02.08.2006)

This is the space version of the popular film Jumanji, but somewhat weaker, less humorous, and with worse special effects due to its lower budget. On the other hand, it is still watchable, and it will especially be appreciated by children aged 6 to 12 and by those who occasionally like to return to their childhood, which is also my case. You have to forgive the naive appearance of the lizard monsters and the fact that it cheaply plays the proven string of family values, and you get an average children's adventure film worth a single watch. Ich habe Jumanji immer gemocht, aber ich habe nur sehr verhaltene Reaktionen auf Zathura - Ein Abenteuer im Weltraum gehört. Und ich sehe wirklich keinen Grund, sich nicht auf dieses Abenteuer einzulassen. Die Originalbücher von Chris Van Allsburg sind kurz, nur 32 Seiten lang, und die Art von Texten, die am besten geeignet sind, die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne eines Vorschulkindes zu überfordern. Deshalb ist es großartig zu sehen, wie Filmemacher aus so spärlichem Material so gute Spielfilme machen können. Das Original Jumanji ist zwar auch ein guter Familienfilm, Zathura - Ein Abenteuer im Weltraum ist ein reiner Kinderfilm, aber er ist auch sehr authentisch in der Psychologie der Beziehung zwischen den beiden Brüdern. Die Ideen in diesem Universum sind großartig, die Reaktionen der Kinder perfekt, und überraschenderweise passt Kristen Stewart (als peinliche ältere Schwester) perfekt dazu. Jon Favreau versteht etwas von Kindern, und das ist der Grund, warum Marvel heute so gut läuft. (04.04.2020)

Eine Mischung aus Jumanji und Explorers - Ein Phantastisches Abenteuer… Zweieinhalb. Die Kinder können so viele Sterne hinzufügen, wie sie wollen, weil Zathura - Ein Abenteuer im Weltraum im Vergleich zu den erwähnten erwachseneren, originelleren und witzigeren Filmen nur ein für Kinder bestimmter schwacher Aufguss ist. Ein paar Szenen haben mir wirklich gefallen. Den kleinen Darsteller des jüngeren Bruders fand ich auch interessant. An der märchenhaften visuellen Seite habe ich nichts zu bemängeln. Das Weggehen des Astronauten war wirklich prima. Trotzdem wurde in dem Film zu viel geschrien und moralisiert. (27.10.2012)

"Zathura: A Space Adventure" is definitely an interesting film. The author of the literary original - Chris Van Allsburg - is a very well-known and popular children's literature author in America. We primarily know his books from the big screen. Besides "Zathura," films like "Jumanji" or "The Polar Express" will definitely ring a bell. "Jumanji" is my favorite film, so I was quite excited for the movie "Zathura: A Space Adventure," as it is based on the same premise as "Jumanji." The characters start playing a board game that comes to life around them, and they experience an incredible adventure right in their own house. And these adventures are truly inventive. Well, at least "Jumanji" is. I admit that "Zathura" disappointed me a bit. Apart from some good moments, there are also moments that completely discourage you. The brothers compete with each other, and gradually their relationship is supposed to reach a stage where they are true brothers again. But their rivalry is unpleasant from the beginning, and it doesn't do them much good when they argue more about it. Sometimes, it is in contrast with this and becomes terribly sentimental and saccharine. Jon Favreau made a film that doesn't harm adults and entertains children for a while, and if nothing else, it at least stirs their imagination. However, "Jumanji" was definitely more inventive and interestingly executed. "Zathura" starts quite discreetly, everything actually takes place as sounds, shadows, etc. On one hand, it is a very pleasant change, but on the other hand, the pair of brothers becomes tiresome after a while. And I think we have already seen several times that Josh Hutcherson can be really annoying. It doesn't change much with age. Definitely not in his case. If you don't like bombastic sci-fi and you liked "Jumanji," you will enjoy the film "Zathura: A Space Adventure" as well. However, I didn't have a strong desire to play this game.
