Sinuhe der Ägypter

When I read Mika Waltarii's extensive novel many years ago, it was a profound experience for me on all levels. Waltari conceived "The Egyptian" as an opportunity to bring everything known about ancient Egypt and its culture to the Western reader at the time of the novel's creation. Egyptology is still developing, and new discoveries might slightly revise the content of Waltari's text, but I still believe that if I returned to reading it, I would definitely not be disappointed. Michael Curtiz's film is just a historical reminder of a certain chapter in the development of American studio cinema. In the 50s and 60s, these expensive costume projects from ancient empires were everywhere and represented the showcase of the production at that time. The Egyptian certainly is not one of the better films, and today the shallowness and trimming of the multi-layered novel motives directly annoy me. It's just a costume blockbuster from the 50s... Overall impression: 40%. (27.03.2024)

Das Großartige an Sinuhe, der Ägypter ist, dass er als nächste Entwicklungsstufe der Historienspektakel gesehen werden kann, die Michael Curtiz, damals noch Michael Kertész, bereits in den 1920er Jahren in Österreich drehte, wobei seine Big-Budget-Filme wie Sodom und Gomorrha, Harun al Raschid und Die Sklavenkönigin Sinuhet so selbstverständlich vorausgingen, wie man sich das nur vorstellen kann. Waltaris gefeierter Roman ist der perfekte Stoff für ein CinemaScope-Epos in De-Luxe-Farben. Die Geschichte ist spektakulär, unterhaltsam, informativ, hat das Zeug dazu, unsterblich zu werden, und das wird sie auch. Traditionell hervorragend ist Ustinov, aber auch Victor Mature glänzt, aber ich habe mich noch nicht mit seiner Leistung in Samson und Delilah abgefunden. Von den statuenhaften ägyptischen Frauen (die in Wirklichkeit babylonische Huren sind), beherrscht Bella Darvi mein Herz. (08.01.2014)
