THE CLASSIC is about two love stories that are divided by a gap of three decades, one in the 1960 - 70s' period and the other in the present time. Other films set in the past, such as BET ON MY DISCO and WET DREAMS have employed the kitsch code and are too childish, but THE CLASSIC distinguishes itself from these films with a sophisticated and composed depiction of both past and present. It aimed thus to help the audience experience nostalgia and to deliver to them the visual images of a beautiful and innocent love. (Verleiher-Text)

Whoever is even slightly familiar with Asian romance, Classic will not surprise them, but does it matter when tenderness flows from it in mighty waves? Personally, I much preferred the radiant and loving story of the mother, where there is no shortage of sadness or, conversely, scenes illuminated by love, with a climax in a brilliant war passage. The daughter's storyline is perhaps too lengthy in its melancholy. 75%

Too bad it was so drawn out at times and there were parts where I was bored. Otherwise, this is a nice romantic movie with one of Asia's best actresses in two lead roles. Another strong point is the perfect music. Still, it feels kind of stodgy... 3.5 stars.

A romantic and, in a way, a touching dual story. What one generation never manages, the other one accomplishes. It's a very slow film, but that doesn't detract from it, oddly enough. I wasn't bored, but I didn't take away much of an experience either. It was enjoyable, but only for one viewing. And I don't think you can get your other half into the swing of things, unless you are both declared romance buffs who prefer to keep your heads in the clouds... I guess so.
