Charles (Hugh Grant) ist ein ewiger Junggeselle und hat schon zahlreiche Affären hinter sich. Bei Hochzeiten ist er zwar ein gern gesehener Gast, er würde aber nie auf die Idee kommen, diesen Schritt selbst zu wagen. Erst als er die attraktive Amerikanerin Carrie Andie MacDowell kennen lernt, geraten seine Vorsätze ins Wanken. Leider ist Charles jedoch nicht in der Lage, im entscheidenden Moment "Ja" zu sagen. Und so muss er auf der nächsten Hochzeit aus seinem Freundeskreis erfahren, dass es für sein Liebesgeständnis zu spät ist Carrie ist verlobt und wird in wenigen Wochen heiraten. Um sein weiteres Leben nicht alleine verbringen zu müssen, will er Fiona Kristin Scott Thomas, seine letzte Affäre, vor den Traualtar führen. Richard Curtis really confirmed to me that he is one of the best screenwriters for romantic comedies. He can write great jokes, but above all, he can write a story that is not so predictable, it is entertaining, and it stands out with great performances by the actors. Mike Newell's direction beautifully suits this film, it is subtle and precise.

The weakest Curtis script I've encountered so far, but still a guarantee of decent and smart entertainment. The original idea is enlivened by a number of pleasant jokes, Newell's relaxed direction and, of course, a host of likeable English actors who are unmissable even in supporting roles. Andie MacDowell may not be the belle of my dreams, but the elegant Grant, the excellent Atkinson and the exuberant Simon Callow made up for it. But hand on heart, Curtis can do much, much better... 70%
