Jim Carroll (Leonardo DiCaprio) ist ein exzellenter Basketballspieler und Schüler einer katholischen Elite Highschool. Doch seine Freizeit verbringt Jim Carroll – In den Straßen von New York. Was anfänglich nur ein harmloses Ausprobieren ist, wird für Jim und seinen Freund Mickey (Mark Wahlberg) allmählich zum Verhängnis. Immer tiefer geraten sie in den Drogensumpf – Prostitution, Gewalt und Kriminalität gehören bald zu ihrem Alltag.
