Ich träumte von Afrika

Wann immer ich zu Kim Basingers Filmen zurückkehre, muss ich über die kollektive Vorstellung lachen, dass gerade ihre schauspielerische Leistung besser ist als die von einem anderen Playboy-Model. Wahrhaftig, es gibt etwas Hypnotisches an ihrer passiven Präsenz auf der Leinwand, aber echtes schauspielerisches Können hat sie nie erreicht. (25.02.2024)

This film has practically no artistic value, it only benefits from its thematic similarity with the legendary Out of Africa. Once again, we have the harsh wilderness of Central Africa, a strong woman with the mental and physical strength to overcome the difficult obstacles on her arduous journey. But we never find out why she ventured into the unknown without hesitation and essentially undermined her own happiness. Unfortunately, the arrival and settling in Africa is typically shallow and full of clichés, everything goes smoothly, with occasional wind, animal attacks, rain, a few poachers, and so on. Perhaps only a few stronger scenes are worth it, and that is mainly due to Kim Basinger's excellent performance. Unfortunately, the whole project appears somewhat cheap and thoughtless, and the relatively long running time kills it. Towards the end, you feel as if youo were staring into the bottom of a dried-up lake – emptiness. (26.12.2006)
